One thing about making your home personal is that you have the “Pow-ah” to make it be whatever you want it to be…and not just go with what everyone else has. This family made that decision to change things up and make their home work for THEM. In this case, having sit down dinners in their formal dining room was just not their style; they envisioned a living room and bar area instead–a lounge-y, relaxed space where they could have friends over for cocktails or to watch the game. To be honest, a New Year’s Eve party was what really got the ball rolling!
This Living Room and Bar had to be New Year’s Eve party ready in less than three weeks–yikes! It can be such a daunting task to find the right pieces for a whole room (or two!), in stock, delivered, set up, and looking GOOD in such a short time…AND have Christmas holidays thrown into the mix…but we did it!
These rooms started off as a veritable blank slate…the existing furniture was not staying; the dining room itself had good bones–paneling, the large bay window, and the ceiling medallion–but everything else needed some attention! We talked about going with a subtle Art Deco vibe, but not crystal-girl-y bling–but a space that worked whether they had a large crowd over or just wanted to sit and read.
In the living room, the only thing we were keeping was the piano. With such a short time constraint, we really had to strategize where we needed to shop to get well priced pieces, in stock items, and the right fit for this stylish couple. We kept the design simple and chose an inviting, velvet sectional in a deep persimmon color and added in lots of pillows for comfort; textured chenille drapery fabric added to the cozy feeling we wanted for these spaces. Distressed leather club chairs were chosen for the bare, and a fabulous Deco-inspired mirror to reflect light was placed on walls that were painted a deep indigo hue for added drama. The artwork chosen for these rooms really added so much personality and color and enchanted the relaxed yet polished overall look we wanted to achieve.
Did we get the room ready on time: Well, the major pieces were in place, but the finishing details took time to complete; in the end, our clients were thrilled with the space and now it is a perfect blend of Deco-inspired, comfy lounge-y-ness that the homeowners love and use all the time!
