When moving into a new home, some people wait to make changes and others would rather tackle things right from the start. The Harris family called us in before they had even purchased the home as they knew it would need some tweaking and they wanted to get started as soon as possible!
At first, the scope of the project at #SouthBond entailed finishing the basement completely and creating a family room area on the main floor. Furniture needed to be purchased, and a few other finishes needed updating. What ended up happening is a snowball effect where we touched every room in the house and took on a full kitchen renovation!
With the help of Les Anderson Construction, we literally transformed this home into a space that reflects the homeowners in a very personal way. Their collections, their art pieces, their East Coast History, their travels around the world, their occupations, and so much more is reflected in the pieces we chose, as well as the finishes, the furniture, and rugs and colors that were chosen for this home. Home is such personal space, and with collaboration, teamwork and a clear vision, we were able to help the moving homeowners every step of the way.
When we talked about the overall color scheme of the home, the homeowners wanted to keep the colors warm, yet fresh. We chose soft green for key rooms of the home, and accented with reds, corals, and warm whites; the jumping off point for the whole home was the floral fabric used on the sofa cushions. We also incorporated many softly curved features into the home as well, along with elements of nature creating continuity and softness. The sofa has a subtle crescent shape, which is echoed in the baby grand piano, the circular side tables and the music cabinet which was a lucky Kijiji find. The leafy pattern in the area rug of the formal living room is also reflected in the dining room chandelier found at a local shop on James Street North. Warm white furniture pieces are throughout the main floor and the Milky white wall color in the kitchen and family room brightens up the most used rooms in the home, creating sunshine even on cloudy days.
The homeowners have a huge collection of books, and we made room for them in the family room built- ins, the main floor office as well as the secondary family room down the iron spiral staircase. Each space was well thought out, as comes with downsizing from a larger space. A lovely guest room was added to the lower level, and the adjacent bathroom was completely revitalized with tile and all new fixtures. On the second floor, new furniture was purchased, and the fresh airy Master Bedroom is a tranquil retreat at the end of the day. A secondary home office fills the upper landing and displays a wonderful array of family photos. Every inch of this home reflects the Harris family—past and present—and we count it a privilege to have worked with them so closely to transform this home as they were moving to Hamilton.
